Independent Study (IS) allows California students to stay on track academically when standard, in-person classroom attendance isn't possible. Depending on your family's needs, state law offers two distinct independent study options.
Short-Term Independent Study is designed for students who will be away from school for 15 or fewer cumulative school days during the school year. This option helps students maintain academic progress during temporary absences such as family travel, medical needs, or other approved circumstances. Students complete assigned coursework and remain connected to their classroom instruction while away.
Long-Term Independent Study is available for students who participate in independent study for 16 or more cumulative school days in a school year. Long-term independent study includes additional state requirements, such as regular teacher interaction, academic progress monitoring, and support services to ensure students remain engaged and successful in their learning. Instruction is aligned to California grade-level standards and is designed to provide educational opportunities comparable to in-person instruction.
For more information about Independent Study options, families are encouraged to contact their school office.
